It's embarrassing to think that I was 38 years old before I first clambered aboard an aircraft and – even worse – this was the same occasion that I first visited Paris. Perhaps the up side was that I was old enough to appreciate what such an amazing city had to offer.
Many things delighted me there but the site that had the greatest impression on me was the Eiffel Tower. I was expecting a cliché but was stunned at how beautiful it was. Climbing the steps to the first level was virtually the only time I've ever experienced vertigo – yet it was a touch of fear mixed with a delicious excitement of actually being inside such a spectacular structure, after so many years of only hearing or reading about it.
