Thailand

The serenity of Thailand's temples and unspoilt beaches came as a welcome relief to the madness of central Bangkok, where eight-lane roads, jammed with cars, tuk-tuks and scooters, carve up the city. I found the most enjoyable way to travel around Bangkok – and often the quickest – was by river taxi on the main Chao Phraya River.

Bangkok was nevertheless an amazing city, with its own temples and quieter spaces; but flying out to Phuket was a pleasant contrast, with space, trees and beaches offering a real tranquillity.
