Venice

Venice would be a joy to visit if it was simply for the experience of a city with a total absence of cars. For that alone it rates as one of the great places in the world. Add in the outstanding history, architecture, canals and culture, and it transcends superlatives.

It took me so long to get around to visiting it, having been repeatedly informed over the preceding years that it was small, crowded, smelly and overrated; so my expectations were lowered before I stepped off the boat that brought me directly from the airport to the island – and by then I was already in love with it.

Sometimes you have to work hard in a city to see the shots that will take a photo beyond the ordinary; but in Venice you are overwhelmed with possible subjects and viewpoints. There's simply too much to look at. Its elegance is astounding.
