Woodvale Cemetery, Brighton

This is one of my favourite venues for photography. This extensive, beautiful cemetery has a wonderful, decaying grandeur, with more than a touch of the Gothic, that makes it photogenic at any time of the year and in every combination of light.

Set in a valley, lushly furnished with trees, shrubs and flowers, it is rich in colour and form, offset by the grey counterpoints of the multitude of ancient tombstones.

I love the atmosphere of almost any cemetery, but this one is something very special – rivalled by only a few others in the country, to my knowledge (Saint Just in Roseland, in Cornwall, being one of them).

This is a place I feel drawn back to again and again, attempting to capture its beauty, its sadness and its wealth of history and memories that it must hold for so many people.
